HISTORY
Camphill started in Aberdeenshire in 1939 as a community school for
children in need of special care, pioneering the recognition of the
potential in all children. The impulse to create communities with adults
with special needs started in 1954 at Botton, Yorkshire.
Since then the Camphill Village Trust has established 12 centres in
Britain; some land-based, rural communities and others in urban areas.
All are based on the principle of “life sharing” and uphold the need for
a real social and cultural life.
There are now Camphill communities all over the globe; both urban and
rural. There are schools, adult communities and those working to provide
a bridge between childhood and adulthood. For more information about

ETHOS
At the core of our ethos is the acceptance and spiritual uniqueness of
each human being and the need to participate in a real and rich cultural
and social life and to have satisfying and purposeful work. This creates
a healing and a therapeutic environment but one which remains a real
life.
We also hope to be a catalyst for change in the wider community; in the
areas of organic farming and food, the attitudes to people with special
needs, and as a celebration of the spirit of community.
