A LAND-BASED, LIFE-SHARING COMMUNITY

Started in 1984 in southwest Scotland, Loch Arthur Community now has a population of 76 people some of whom are men and women with learning disabilities.

We have over 500 acres of land; a large mixed organic farm, a vegetable and fruit garden, forests and a large loch.

There are seven houses, a small hall, a weavery, creamery, wood-workshop, papermaking workshop and a bakery.

We attempt to live and work together in a way that recognises the dignity and uniqueness of each human being and does not distinguish between those who are called disabled and those who are not.

We hope that by living together with our combined strengths and weaknesses, skills and abilities, we will create a human and caring environment for all those who live here.

The social and cultural life of the community is rich and challenging following the festivals of the year, the unfolding seasons. We see our lives together as opportunities for celebration.
