Top of the Farm Shops
THE CREAMERY and farm shop at our Loch Arthur Community in Dumfriesshire has been named one of Britain's best farm shops by the Daily Telegraph.
This latest accolade for the multi-award winning team at Lock Arthur highlights again how people of all abilities can work together to produce outstanding results. By offering the right kind of support, the community gives people with special needs the opportunity to make a real contribution in a successful social enterprise.
Work in the creamery is shared by an all-abilities team with some of the key jobs carried out by those with disabilities - including butter churning and packing, cheesemaking, caring for the maturing cheeses and labelling the finished products.
TOP RANKING
The Lock Arthur farm shop was named one of the UK's top 50 farm shops by Telegraph food writer Rose Prince. It ranks alongside other leading outlets such as the Queen's Windsor Farm Shop, Chatsworth Farm Shop and Daylesford Organic
In addition to the Loch Arthur Creamery's award-winning cheese the farm shop also sells produce from the community's bakery; fruit, salads and vegetables from the gardens and meat and other milk products from the farm. Community members with learning disabilities are involved in all these enterprises.
ABILITIES
The Loch Arthur community places the emphasis on abilities rather than disabilities. The emphasis is on mutual support with everyone in the community supporting each other, not only in their work but at home and in leisure and cultural activities too.
The success of the creamery and farm shop show that it's a formula that works and the community is planning a new farm shop, bakery and café.
