cvt communities | Loch Arthur, Dumfries

LOCH ARTHUR is a modern rural community offering a shared way of life with support and challenges for men and women with learning disabilities and other special needs.
Situated on 500 acres of farm and woodland surrounding a loch in beautiful countryside near Dumfries, Loch Arthur is for those who enjoy a gentler and quieter pace of life. Around 75 people, some 30 of whom have special needs, live and work here.
We are an integral part of the surrounding community, and the development of our farming activities and creamery have inspired others in the region where agriculture is still the mainstay of the local economy.
Loch Arthur is an intimate community, where everyone knows each other, is involved with each other, and, most importantly, supports each other. We also have many connections with friends in the locality.

At Home

The feeling of being ‘at home' at Loch Arthur is enhanced by accommodation in small households with only two to five people with special needs in each of our houses. These are scattered around our estate, and vary in style and character, from cottages to farmhouses, a country house to modern purpose-built homes.
Some of those coming to Loch Arthur are people who benefit from a little more care and support, and for whom a shared life in a close-knit household is advantageous.

Award winning work opportunities

Much of our working life is based around the farm and gardens. We take pride and pleasure in producing fine cheeses, hand-churned butter, yoghurt, bread, biscuits, fresh vegetables, fruit and farm-reared meat for sale in our farm shop. Our cheeses are medal winners in the British Cheese Awards. The farm shop is open every weekday, serving many regular customers.
We also have craft workshop producing colourful hand-woven items, wooden trays and bird houses and hand-made paper, cards and notebooks.

Much more than work

Our social, cultural and spiritual life provides challenges and stimulation through social interaction. New friends are made, undiscovered talents are revealed and new confidence is discovered by being creative together through plays, music and singing. Many of these creative activities celebrate the Christian festivals throughout the year.
Artistic activities can also be in small groups or something that an individual enjoys.
Our location also provides plenty of scope in the outdoors, with sailing, walking and visits to the sea or nearby towns and villages.
Everyone also enjoys their own hobbies and interests, listening to their favourite music, following their football team, watching a video.

Michael's story

"I like working outside when the weather is nice. I work in the garden in the morning and the bakery in the afternoon.
In the garden I do weeding if it's not raining. We grow carrots and vegetables without chemical fertilisers, which is a good thing.
We recycle our cardboard and batteries. We can't recycle plastic which is a bit of a nuisance. Britain has been quite slow with recycling. If every house used low energy light bulbs we would save energy"
