volunteering and jobs | Volunteers

VOLUNTEERS usually join our communities for a period of about a year. Many are young people from all over the world seeking new experiences and wishing to help others. A considerable number are taking a gap year before embarking on studies or setting out on their chosen career path. We also welcome older people who are taking a sabbatical or career break, who bring skills and life experience to our communities.
All contribute a great deal to our lives, bringing different cultures and enormous enthusiasm while shouldering responsibilities, gaining new skills and perspectives, and a broadening understanding of people of all abilities.

No experience needed

As a  volunteer you need no experience of working with adults with special needs. We just ask that you bring an open mind and a willingness to get involved and take responsibility in the house and at work.
We will provide training to equip you with the knowledge you require to meet our statutory responsibilities and an insight into the Camphill ethos on which our community life is based. There will be other on-the-job training according to the type of work you do in your time with us.

 Visas and payment

Volunteers from overseas should come with a return ticket or enough for the fare home. If you are a citizen of a country outside the European Economic Area you will need a visa which will usually allow you to stay for up to one year.
Co-workers and  volunteers who live in our communities are not paid directly for their work. Instead their needs are met from the resources of the community. As a  volunteer you will receive accommodation, food and a small weekly allowance to cover clothing, other personal needs and expenses.

A way of life

You will have your own room in comfortable, modern, community accommodation alongside our co-workers and community members with special needs and share in the life of the household. In addition to supporting household members with special needs at home you will also be involved with the community's workplaces.
Involvement in our communities is a way of life, not a job. So while there are no rigid on- and off-duty hours, you will get time for yourself, for leisure and for holidays.
You must be able to communicate well in English before you arrive.  While our community life is based on Christian ideals and we mark our journey through the year by celebration of the Christian festivals, we welcome people of all persuasions who respect this aspect of our community life.
